Emmanuel Adebayor, a forward for Tottenham Hotspur in England’s Premier League, recently converted to Islam.
The 31-year-old from Togo has scored 35 goals for Tottenham since joining the club in 2011. Previous in his career he’s played for Real Madrid (Spain), Manchester City (England), Arsenal (England), Monaco (France) and Metz (France). In 63 appearances for Togo’s national team, Adebayor has scored 29 goals.
In the video below, Adebayor is seen taking the shahada — the declaration of faith that is the first pillar of Islam — in a ceremony alongside other converts. Adebaypr joins Franck Ribery, Thierry Henry, Nicolas Anelka and Eric Abidal, among others, on the list of international soccer stars who have converted to Islam during their careers.
