Some of the best soccer in the world is played in Germany. Led by a star-studded lineup that includes Muslim star midfielder Mesut Ozil, the German men’s national team is the reigning FIFA World Cup champions. The German women’s team finished fourth in this year’s FIFA Women’s World Cup and has won the second-most titles (two) in the tournament’s history behind the United States. German pro clubs have won seven UEFA Champions League titles — most recently by Bayern Munich in 2013.
One of the best players in Germany’s top pro league, Bundesliga, is Salomon Kalou of the club Hertha Berlin. The 30-year-old striker from Ivory Coast, a practicing Muslim, is currently fifth in Bundesliga in scoring with nine goals this season. Here are some of his recent highlights:
Kalou’s pro career began in Ivory Coast and has included stops in the Netherlands, England and France. Along the way he’s won a Premier League (England) championship, four FA Cup (England) titles and a Champions League title. He has also played for his national team in two World Cups, one Olympics, and four Africa Cup of Nations tournaments.
